Leperwitch’s debut LP, Curse of Consciousness, released on May 2, 2025, stands as a formidable entry in the harsh noise wall and power electronics genres. Crafted by Chattanooga-based artist Dora Robertson and produced by Chattanooga's own Joseph J. Micolo, this album examines the cyclical nature of self-destruction experienced by those grappling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Through nine tracks, Robertson narrates a journey of confronting and attempting to break free from these destructive patterns and the consequences.
The album opens with "The Cycle Begins Again," a track that sets the thematic tone by exploring recurring trauma and the struggle for self-understanding. "Pain in the Process/Sorrow in my Hands" follows, weaving a tapestry of bleak corruption and eulogies of final breaths, highlighting the pain inherent in the healing process. "Bitter Eulogy" confronts betrayal and the end of toxic relationships with unflinching honesty. "Erasure" dives into themes of isolation and the desire to disappear, while "Meaningless" asserts a defiant reclaiming of self-worth against external judgments.
Robertson's approach to sound design is both immersive and confrontational, employing dense layers of noise that mirror the emotional intensity of the subject matter. While unrelenting in its subject matter, the album's structure allows for moments of introspection amidst the sonic chaos, offering listeners a space to process and reflect.
Curse of Consciousness, as a broader piece, challenges and engages, inviting listeners into a raw and unfiltered exploration of trauma and resilience. Not only is it an accurate representation of Robertson’s live performances, but it also showcases Leperwitch's ability to blend personal narrative with experimental soundscapes.
